What is UN International Older Persons Day?
Established by the United Nations on December 14, 1990, International Older Persons Day was first observed on October 1, 1991. This day is celebrated annually to honor the valuable contributions of older individuals and to highlight issues that affect their lives, such as healthcare, social protection, and participation in society.

UN Principles for Older Persons
The UN Principles for Older Persons emphasize the rights of older adults to:
-
Independence
-
Participation
-
Care
-
Self-Fulfillment
-
Dignity

These principles guide our efforts in ensuring that older individuals enjoy full respect for their dignity, beliefs, needs, privacy, and the right to make decisions about their care and quality
of life.

Get Involved:
Schools and Community Participation
BCEHUB encourages local schools to raise awareness of UN International Older Persons Day among their students. We invite schools to highlight the significant contributions older individuals have made, and continue to make, within our communities.
Schools can share images of their International Older Persons Day events
with us, and these will be featured on the BCEHUB website.
Let’s work together to promote the value of our elders and recognize
the role they play in shaping our society.
